This is my first piano that includes the name “Fender” on the logo. It’s from the period just after felt hammer tips were replaced with the more durable neoprene tips but before much of the maple structural components were replaced with aluminum. The hammers are hybrid – half wood and half plastic. Its sound is very… fuzzy. It’s mellow but very expressive with lots of crunch when the keys are struck hard enough.
The piano was in decent shape when I bought it, although it wasn’t quite playable. Some of the hammer tips were missing and many of the tines were way out of adjustment causing them to either collide with the pickups or make almost no sound at all. The Tolex was largely intact but it hid extensive damage to the wood underneath – damage that required some creative repairs to put right.
